Artificial Intelligence (AI) is this year’s monster.

Our inboxes, news feeds, and television programs are littered with AI-related topics at the moment, and while most of the conversation is monopolized by doomsday messaging and the impending death of the five page essay, there are legitimate issues that deserve further discussion.

Set to become an integral part of our lives and the lives of our children, influencing various aspects of society, including education, AI isn’t something that we as parents can afford to ignore.

As parents, it’s important to understand the implications of AI on our children’s learning and development. In this brief article, we’ll explore the fundamentals of AI, its potential benefits and risks, and provide practical advice on how parents can navigate this evolving landscape.

Understanding Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence refers to the technology that enables computers or machines to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence. It involves mimicking human thought processes and behaviors, allowing machines to make predictions, recommendations, and decisions. AI systems analyze vast amounts of data, identify patterns, and use algorithms to generate insights and responses. AI is already present in various aspects of our lives, and has been so for quite some time, in everything from Amazon recommendations to medical diagnostics.

Only now, however, is it beginning to enter the classroom. And here its likely effects are far reaching.

Many of these effects will be empowering. AI has the potential to revolutionize education by personalizing learning, automating administrative tasks, and enhancing the overall educational experience. However, it’s crucial to recognize both the opportunities and risks associated with AI in the classroom.

The Benefits of AI in Education

AI offers numerous benefits that can positively impact our children’s educational experience:

    AI-powered educational tools can adapt to a child’s individual needs, providing personalized learning experiences. These tools analyze data on a student’s performance and preferences, enabling tailored instruction and targeted interventions to enhance learning outcomes. AI-powered textbooks, for example, could easily adjust their copy to a student’s age, learning style, and cognitive abilities. A child with dyslexia would find that such a textbook presents the information in formats that make it easier for him or her to process visually.
  2. Enhanced Teaching and Administrative Efficiency
    AI can automate administrative tasks, such as grading assignments and generating reports, freeing up a teacher’s time to focus on instruction and student support. Intelligent tutoring systems can also provide real-time feedback and guidance to students, augmenting the role of teachers in the learning process. While a traditional quiz only provides outcome-based feedback (this answer is correct or incorrect), AI has the ability to provide immediate informational feedback, not only offering correction but explaining how one could better arrive at the correct answer and highlighting where in the process the student might have taken a wrong turn.

    AI has the potential to bridge educational gaps by providing access to quality education for students in remote areas or underserved communities. Online platforms powered by AI can deliver educational content, resources, and support to students regardless of their neighborhood, city, state, or nation. We don’t all live in affluent communities with vast personnel and material resources. AI can help fill many of those gaps that currently effect underserved schools.

    AI can analyze vast amounts of data on student performance, behavior, and engagement to generate actionable insights for educators. This data-driven approach helps identify areas of improvement, track progress, and inform instructional decisions to optimize learning outcomes. The ability to spot a child’s unique learning needs is often difficult for a single teacher who must grade and assess several dozen student assignments per a day. AI can provide flags and notifications for teachers and administrators, alerting them when a student’s learning patterns deserve further investigation or assistance.
  5. Innovative Learning Experiences
    AI technologies, such as virtual reality and augmented reality, can create immersive and interactive learning experiences. Students can explore virtual environments, conduct experiments, and engage in simulations, enhancing their understanding and retention of complex concepts. This is the area with some of the largest benefits, but also the one made the most opaque by its many unknowns. The rise of augmented reality tools is coming shortly, and they too will fill our lives with new habits, both good and bad, much as the internet and the smartphone have done over the previous two decades. AI will inform and strengthen these tools, giving them greater weight in our child’s day.

The Concerns and Risks of AI in Education

Now for the inevitable warnings. For while AI holds great potential for education, it’s important to address the concerns and risks associated with its implementation:

  1. Data Privacy and Security
    AI systems rely on vast amounts of data, including personal information about students. Protecting this data from breaches, unauthorized access, and misuse is essential. Parents and educators should ensure that appropriate measures are in place to safeguard a child’s privacy and comply with data protection regulations (many of which don’t yet exist in state and federal law.) The trick will be to rapidly construct policies and procedures before the implementation of such systems rather than in response to problems that arise after said implementation.
  2. Bias and Discrimination
    AI algorithms are only as unbiased as the data they are trained on. If the training data contains biases or reflects societal inequalities, AI systems may perpetuate and amplify those biases. In many respects, we as educators will need to think of AI itself as a student that needs proper development, teaching these systems proper emotional coaching, learning spectrum analysis, and tendency towards cognitive bias.

    While AI can enhance learning experiences, it cannot fully replace human interaction and emotional support. Face-to- face interactions with teachers and peers are essential for social and emotional development. Parents should ensure that AI is used as a complement to, rather than a substitute for, human connections in education.
  4. Over-reliance on AI and Loss of Critical Thinking Skills
    Over-reliance on AI systems for decision-making and problem-solving may hinder the development of critical thinking skills in students. It’s important to strike a balance between using AI as a tool and fostering independent thinking, creativity, and problem-solving abilities.

    AI raises ethical questions, such as the ownership and use of data, algorithmic transparency, and the potential for AI to replace certain professions. Many of the natural language processing AIs currently being used, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard, were trained on copyrighted materials without permission from the authors of said material. Similarly, image creation AI’s, such as DALL E and Midjourney, base their creations on patterns found in millions of artworks whose artists were similarly uncompensated. These issues can’t be ignored by schools making use of such tools. Parents and educators should engage in discussions about the ethical implications of AI and help children develop a critical understanding of its impact on society.

Promoting Responsible and Ethical AI Use

As parents, you play a crucial role in guiding your children’s engagement with AI and ensuring its responsible and ethical use. Here are some practical tips:

  1. Educate Yourself and Your Children
    Take the time to learn about AI and its implications for education. Online courses and resources can provide valuable insights into AI technologies and their impact on society. Learn more about the various AI-enhanced tools available. Engage in conversations with your children to help them understand the benefits and risks of AI.
  2. Foster Digital Literacy Skills
    Teach your children critical digital literacy skills, such as evaluating online information, identifying biases, and understanding the limitations of AI systems. Encourage them to question and think critically about the content they encounter online and, indeed, to sport a healthy skepticism of any information found there.

    Discuss the importance of privacy and data protection with your children. Teach them about responsible online behavior, the risks of sharing personal information, and the need to be cautious when interacting with AI-powered platforms and services. Similarly, highlight that they are responsible for guarding the privacy of others as well. These tools will be increasingly used in both pranks and bullying in the years to come, and it will be important to teach our children that uploading another person’s photo to an AI-powered tool is just as socially unacceptable as opening up someone else’s mail.
  4. Encourage Collaboration and Communication
    Promote collaboration and communication skills in your children, emphasizing the value of human connections and interactions in education. Encourage them to work together with peers, engage in group discussions, and seek guidance from teachers and mentors.
  5. Monitor and Limit Screen Time
